MassBay Wins Gold for Regional Marketing and Public Relations Awards

WELLESLEY HILLS, MA – MassBay Community College is pleased to announced it has been recognized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) as an Excellence Awards Winner 2018 for its outstanding work in marketing and communications to promote and advance the college. MassBay has been awarded a Gold in the category of “Earned Media or Publicity Campaign” for earned media coverage of the MassBay’s Men’s Basketball team’s unlikely journey to the 2017 NJCAA National Championships. The story earned coverage on various news outlets, including Boston 25, NBC Boston, and The Boston Globe.

CASE District 1’s Circle of Excellence awards recognizes achievement in advancement and communications work among 4-year and 2-year colleges and universities. MassBay’s Marketing and Institutional Communications Director Lee Koh, Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications Liz Cooper and former Athletic Director, Basketball Head Coach and currently the Chief Diversity Officer and Special Assistant to the President Bill Raynor attended the annual awards ceremony in Boston, MA and accepted the award on behalf of the College.

MassBay’s submission highlighted the Men’s Basketball Team’s improbable journey to the National Junior College Championships, while also capturing support from the local community who finally had their very own March Madness team to root for. This scrappy underdog team, plagued with injuries, won the New England title and the opportunity to compete on a national stage – all in the same year that their beloved coach Bill Raynor announced his retirement from coaching after 42 years.

“We are extremely honored to accept this award on behalf of MassBay Community College,” said Lee Koh, the College’s Director of Marketing and Institutional Communications. “As a community, we were inspired by the tremendous grit and perseverance of our Men’s Basketball team during the 2017 season as they journeyed to the national championships despite injuries and other struggles. We are grateful to Coach Raynor, all of the other coaches, and to the team for opening their practices and games to us and to the media. It was a true honor to be able to tell their story.”
