• Paid Family and Medical Leave Act Update

    Last year, the Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (PFMLA) was enacted by the legislature and signed into law by Governor Baker.  The Act establishes a system for paid family leave of up to 12 weeks to care for a family member, and up to 20 weeks for your own illness.  The tax that pays for the leave begins in 2019, and leave itself will be available beginning in 2021.  Earlier this month, the new Department of Family and Medical Leave issued an extension of the deadline to secure state approval of proposed private plans from June 30, 2019 to September 20, 2019.   Additionally, the Department delayed the requirement for employers to provide notice to employees of the provisions of the PFMLA from May 31, 2019 to June 30, 2109.  The Department has created template notices to employees that employers may access on the government website or they may create their own notice.   The following links may be helpful:
